Explore the Hidden Depths of Your Own Eye
Most of us don’t have the option of looking inside our own bodies for a visual clue to what’s going on with our health or our sight. However, our optometrists can help.
Access a clear view of your inner eye with retinal imaging. Talk to your eye doctor at Birring Eyecare to learn what retinal imaging could show you about your vision.
Focus In On The Retina
The retina is the layer of cells that line the back of the eye. The retina includes special cells called photoreceptors that are sensitive to light and send signals to your brain to facilitate sight.
Our retina has two types of photoreceptors called rods and cones. Rods are responsible for both low light and peripheral vision and are scattered towards the outside of the retina. Cones help us see colour and detail and are concentrated in the macula. The macula is at the center of the retina. The macula is responsible for details in vision, including making sure faces and text are clear. If we zoom in even closer, we see the fovea. The fovea is a small depression in the center of the macula that provides the sharpest sight.
What Can We Watch For?
Retinal imaging can help us monitor for different conditions. It can even help us discover why vision may be worsening with no apparent cause. Retinal images can expose problems including:
- Diabetes.
- Glaucoma.
- Macular Degeneration.
- Retinal Toxicity.
There are limitations, however. For example, retinal imaging can’t highlight bleeding disorders in the eye
What To Expect
For a clear picture of the back of the eye, we will need to dilate your pupil. We do this with special eye drops that take effect after about 20 minutes.
Once your pupil is dilated, a non-invasive laser scans your eye, sending the image to a computer almost instantly. Since our optometrists have such quick access to these images, we can discuss the result right away.
The dilation of your pupils can last several hours, so you’ll need to wear sunglasses and arrange for transport home with someone else’s help.
